“Modern farming is leading to mass and Quality export” Minister Mukeshimana

27th June 2017, the Minister for Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana officially closed the 12th National Agricultural Show that ran from the 22nd June at Mulindi in Kigali.

She urged Rwandans to give priority to market oriented farming, saying the sector has enormous potential for exports and wealth creation as well as nutrition for families.

The 12th National Agricultural Show was organized under the theme, “Adopt Climate Resilient Technologies to Improve Farmer Livelihoods.”

Speaking on behalf of national exhibitors, Jean Claude Shirimpumu, a professional farmer from Gicumbi District, said they are thankful for the yearly agriculture expo because it enables them to get more market opportunities for their produce and also they get to learn from others.

Mr. Shirimpumu said that with his farm of more than 2000 heads of Pigs, he targets regional markets where he exports Pork to Southern Uganda, Congo and next will be the whole East Africa. To reach the large international Market, Mr Shirimpumu gathered all pig farmers in Rwanda in a federation where market studies will be conducted and harmonized. He urged the Ministry to organize local and international trade fairs and exhibitions to attract more market to Rwandan products.

On behalf of international exhibitors, Simon Ethangatha, a Kenyan investor who was exhibiting summer flowers said that all regional countries should be learning from Rwanda’s efforts to emerge from traditional to modern farming. “Rwanda has really made a great step whereby almost everybody has a close attachment to agriculture and seeks for more professionalism which makes everybody have hope for the sector’s future.”

Since long ago, Rwanda exported tea and coffee but since NAEB’s inception, the country has increased efforts in implementing policies and strategies for developing exports of other agricultural and livestock products meeting international market requirements especially in horticulture.
