Building a Professional Culture for Coffee Preparation as a Strategy to Boost Domestic Coffee Consumption in Rwanda
The 2011 World Barista Champion, Mr. Alejandro Mendez from El Salvador is in Rwanda to train a cohort of 20 selected local baristas for three days in preparation for the National Golden Barista Championship competition.
National Agricultural and Export Development Board (NAEB) in collaboration with JICA’s CUP Rwanda project and Sustainable growers have organized a countrywide competition for baristas as a way of sharpening their skills to become more professional in quality preparation and tasting of coffee beverage.
A national barista competition has been running across Rwanda from July and August 2019, whereby 20 baristas who won the provincial contests will participate in a special training and competition that will be facilitated by The 2011 World Barista Champion, Mr. Alejandro Mendez from El Salvador from 14th to 16th August. The National Barista Champion, 2019 will be announced on 16th August 2019 at Gorilla Hotel – Kigali, in a grand finale that will take place from 15: 00 PM.
The “National Golden Barista Championship” is in line with the JICA’s project of the Coffee Upgrade & Promotion in Rwanda. JICA in collaboration with NAEB has been implementing a three year project since 2017 with the aim of strengthening the coffee value chain in Rwanda. Sustainable growers is an international NGO which supports local coffee farmers, especially women, to roast, brew, cup and serve coffee. The purpose behind this National Barista Championship initiative is to enhance baristas skills to build local personnel’s capability to make quality great-tasting coffee beverages that will ultimately increase local consumption of Rwandan coffee, hence growth of the sector.
