NAEB with partners handed over cold trucks to horticultural exporters to strengthen cold chain and boost export revenues
The National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB), in collaboration with the USAID-funded Kungahara Wagura Amasoko project, handed over the first batch of nine refrigerated trucks to Rwandan horticultural exporters on 6th November 2024 at NAEB Headquarters.
This investment aims to reinforce Rwanda’s cold chain logistics, enabling high-value horticultural products to reach international markets in prime condition. The trucks were secured through a co-investment model, with 60% funded by partnerships and 40% by the exporters, highlighting a collaborative commitment to enhancing Rwanda’s agricultural export capacity.
This initiative is central to NAEB’s strategy to boost export revenues by improving cold chain infrastructure, reducing post-harvest losses, and ensuring product competitiveness in global markets.
After handing over 829 million Frw valued trucks, NAEB CEO Claude Bizimana noted that this important milestone represents a sustainable solution to longstanding challenges in the horticulture sector.
"This investment provides a sustainable solution to cold chain challenges in the horticulture industry, particularly in maintaining optimal produce quality from farm to market. Enhanced cold chain capacity will strengthen Rwanda’s position in high-value horticultural exports, boosting both volume and revenue. NAEB is pleased with this milestone and remains committed to supporting exporters through quality infrastructure, capacity building, market linkages, and necessary advocacy to ensure our products reach their destinations in optimal condition."
The refrigerated trucks are expected to significantly benefit Rwanda’s horticulture industry by preserving product quality, meeting international standards, and supporting environmental goals through reduced spoilage and waste, ultimately lowering the carbon footprint. This initiative underscores the collaborative efforts between NAEB and its partners to drive Rwanda’s agricultural export sector forward.
The refrigerated trucks are expected to significantly benefit Rwanda’s horticulture industry.Over the past five years, Rwandan horticultural exports have achieved a total volume of 261.6 million kg and generated $233.6 million in revenue, contributing to the country’s overall agricultural export revenue of $3.2 billion. The introduction of these refrigerated trucks is a crucial step toward sustaining and expanding Rwanda’s export growth in the years to come, reinforcing the country’s commitment to delivering high-quality produce to the global market.
