Rwanda exhibits Specialty Coffee at SCAJ
From 11th to 13th Sep 2019, nine Rwandan coffee exporting companies are attending the 16th edition of the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ) in Tokyo, Japan. This World Specialty Coffee Conference and Exhibition is known to be the biggest specialty coffee platform in Asia.
The Rwandan delegates, led by one official from National Agricultural Export Development Board will use the platform to promote Rwandan coffee and close deals with the Japanese and other international coffee buyers.
“SCAJ has been a channel where Rwanda coffee stakeholders strike business deals and adopt new strategies for development of the coffee sector. The journey aims at strengthening existing buyer relationships and develop new market links based on the specialty association platform." Says Peace Kabanyana, the official from NAEB who attends the conference.
The Rwanda coffee exporters are at the SCAJ also to gain a better understanding on the specialty coffee markets. They are keen to know emerging requirements from potential buyers, get deep insights on quality, quantity dimensions, supply and demand schedules and pricing issues. Rwanda Coffee’s stand is alongside a total of 126 specialty coffee companies, organizations and other groups exhibiting at SCAJ. In addition, a record-surpassing total of 29,801 people from 28 countries and regions will be visiting the exhibition during the three-day event.
The delegation from Rwanda will specifically create awareness and raise visibility of the Rwanda Coffee brand to the Japanese and the entire global specialty coffee players. “They will have chance to strengthen the existing client relationships and negotiate for new business relationship with potential buyers.”
“We will be exhibiting coffees and validate the specialty attributes of Rwandan coffee in form of coffee tasting sessions.” Kabanyana added.
Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ) is concerned about raising awareness and deepening understanding of Specialty Coffee among Japanese consumers and coffee growers around the world. SCAJ seeks to spread and publicize systematic knowledge and practices in coffee processes from farm to the cup and to expand coffee consumption.
The volumes of Rwandan coffee exports to Japan tremendously grew from 31.7MT in 2008 to 172.3MT by 2018. This shows a significant positive increment of 18.4%. Up to last year, over 50 U.S.A, European and Asian coffee companies bought coffee directly from Rwanda.
