Brief Description

Rwanda sweet banana also known as Musa acumunata or Igisukari (ibisukari) in the Kinyarwanda  language is the elongated banana meant for eating when it ripens into either yellow or green skin color. The banana crop was introduced in Rwanda in 1971. The sweet banana is rich in potassium,Vitamins C and B-6.

Brief Description

Banana is also known as Musa sapientum; Musa cavendishii and Musa nana, Plantain bananas are ormally eaten when cooked. Plantain banana are ripe banana species eaten either when cooked or roasted.

Brief Description

Avocado (Persea Americana), is a tropical tree fruit crop which originated in Central and South America and now widely distributed in the tropics. In Rwanda, the fruit it is grown in all the regions with Southern province leading followed by Western, Eastern, Northern and the least being Kigali City. The crop is grown for both local consumption and export. The crop is a good source of income for farmers besides earning foreign currency.

  • Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Hass, fuerte, Ettinger, Booth, Choquette and collisson, Nabal, Puebla, Reed, Simmonds, Pinkerton and Bacon. The most popular varieties for export in Rwanda are Hass and fuerte.
  • Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Although Avocado crop is grown all over the country, it is predominantly found in Gisagara, Huye, Nyagatare, Nyanza and Rusizi districts.
  • Climatic conditions for growth: In Rwanda, Avocado trees do best at moderate warm temperatures between 15ºC to 30ºC with moderate humidity. Avocado is moderately drought tolerant and thrives well in areas with an annual precipitation of 1000 -1200 millimeters. In Rwanda Avocado trees are planted in March through June.
  • Soils: In Rwanda, Avocado grows in a wide range of soil types ranging from deep, fertile, well-aerated, sandy or alluvial loams with neutral or slightly acid pH values (pH 5 to 7)

Brief Description

Mangoes are tropical fruits that belong to the same family as that of pistachios, gandaria, mombin, and ashews. It originated in South-East Asia and is the most important crop among the tropical and subtropical fruits grown in more than 110 countries of the world. In Rwanda, Mango is cultivated in all the provinces, although the Eastern Province is well suited for mango production. Mangoes contribute to farmer family diets as well as serving as a cash crop.

  • Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Burera, Musanze, Ngororero, Nyamasheke, Muhanga, and Kamonyi districts
  • Climatic conditions for growth: Well suited in both tropical and subtropical conditions in Rwanda temperatures between 20-26°C. Suitable in a dry period of at least 3 months during flowering and sufficient heat during fruit ripening time

Brief Description

Tamarillo is a member of the Soloanaceae family, with potato, tomato, pepino and naranjilla. Once known as the 'Tree Tomato'. Native to the Andean region of Bolivia and north-west Argentina, the wild tamarillo seems to have all but disappeared from its native habitat. Tamarillos were first introduced to New Zealand in the late 1800’s from Asia. However, the red tamarillo was developed by an Auckland nurseryman in the 1920’s. It was not until the 2nd World War that substantial quantities were produced, then an increase in production with the horticultural boom in the 1970’s.

  • Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Countrywide
  • Soil and climate requirements: Climatic conditions for growth: The tamarillo prefers subtropical climate, with rainfall between 600 and 4000 millimeters and annual temperatures between 15 and 20°C. It is intolerant to frost (below -2 °C) and drought stress. It is assumed that fruit set is affected by night temperatures.

Brief Description

The passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), family Passifloraceae, is a native of Brazil. It is shallow rooted, perennial and climbs other plants to search for light by means of tendrils. Passion fruit was introduced in Rwanda for commercial juice processing. Rwanda produces passion fruit both for the local and export markets. The country exports fresh purple passion fruits to the European market.

  • Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Passiflora edulis (Purple passion fruit) na Passiflora flavocarpa (Yellow passion fruit), Sweet passion fruit, Giant passion fruit, Banana passion fruit. The fresh purple passion is the dominant variety produced for both local and export market.
  • Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Popularly grown in Gakenke Nyaruguru, Rulindo, Gicumbi, Musanze and Burera districts.
  • Climatic conditions for growth: In Rwanda, passion fruit grows well up to an altitude of 2000 m with an annual rainfall of 1000 to 2500 mm. The crop thrives well at tropical to subtropical humid climate and temperature of 200C to 300C.
  • Soils: It grows best in light sandy loam well drained soils with pH between 6.0 -7.0.
  • Destination: UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Uganda, DRC, and Congo Brazzaville.

Pineapples is a fruit crop that originated from Latin America. It reached Africa between 16th and 17th Century and in Rwanda after 1962. In Rwanda Pineapples are commonly grown in western, northern, southern and eastern provinces.

  • Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Queen and Smooth Cayenne and Sugarloaf, Pineapple
  • Cultivation locations in Rwanda: It is mostly grown in Kirehe, Ngoma, Bugesera, Kayonza, Nyagatare, Gisagara, Huye, Kamonyi and Muhanga districts
  • Climatic conditions for growth: Pineapple grows in warm and humid climate at low elevations areas within temperature range of 15ºC to 30ºC. It is drought tolerant because of the special water storage cells
  • Destination: Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates
